Crêpes: A French Tradition Born by Mistake
The story of crêpes starts in 13th-century Brittany, a region in north-west France. A housewife accidentally spilled thin buckwheat porridge onto a hot cooking stone… and voilà — the first crêpe was born!
Back then, crêpes were savory and made from buckwheat (called galettes), perfect for peasants who needed filling, affordable food. It wasn’t until much later that sweet crêpes — made with wheat flour — became a Parisian favorite. Crêpes aren’t just food — they’re tradition. Every February 2nd, the French celebrate La Chandeleur (Crêpe Day). It’s kind of like France’s pancake day — and flipping a crêpe with a coin in your hand i upposed to bring good luck!
